Now onto the main article…

We are all told about the importance of eating healthily these days-getting the right balance of all the food groups; eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables; enjoying a diverse and balanced diet.

This is all very well, and of course it is very important however, did you know that if the healthy foods you are buying are not organic, you run the risk of building up toxins in your body and causing health problems?

We are all told that we should be eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, and many people manage this but it is equally important to make sure that as many of these foods as possible are organic.

When you eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, you should be congratulating yourself on living as healthily as you can but if you eat non organic foods then you’re not getting the full benefits from the foods.

There are a few foods that carry the residues of chemical pesticides and weedkillers more than most, and as such it is essential to make sure that these, at least, are organic.

There is an annual review of foods called the Dirty Dozen. This list is published to establish the levels of toxicity retained in non organic foods, and it makes for scary reading! If you want to make sure that your diet is as healthy as possible, make sure that you buy the following foods, at the very least, organically:

Meat

In developed countries at least, meat is a staple diet. Unless you are a vegetarian or you do not eat a lot of meat, you run the risk of ingesting a whole host of harmful chemicals from your non organic bacon butty or Sunday roast.

Factory farmed animals in the meat industry are fed with feed that contains pesticides and chemicals, and can even be from genetically modified plants.

As well as this, they are treated with an assortment of drugs, from antibiotics to growth hormones. These growth hormones are stored in the fatty tissues and find their way into your body and some have even been linked to cases of cancer.

Organic meat, as well as being better for you, will also taste better due to the far more natural lifestyle of the animal. Organically raised animals are kept outdoors far more than non organic, and the fact that they can roam about and develop muscle makes the meat leaner and tastier.

Dairy

Milk is another staple food in the Western world; babies and young children need the calcium to grow strong bones, and it is a good source of protein.

Everybody uses milk, for things like cooking, and cups of tea. On top of that the by products such as cheese, butter, cream, yoghurt and the like are enjoyed by people all over the world. Did you know that traces of pesticides are found in all non organic milk?

This is from the feed that the cows are fed and also the chemicals that are used to keep them “healthy.” Buy organic for a better tasting milk from cows that are allowed to graze naturally.

Vegetables

Of course it’s a good thing to eat lots of vegetables. Vegetables contain all sorts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients, and they are a great source of fiber however, non organic vegetables are also a great source of pesticides!

Conventionally farmed vegetables are covered with chemicals from day one of their growing life. Artificial fertilizers in the soil, chemical weedkillers to keep down weeds (this also destroys natural diversity) and pesticides to kill insects and diseases.

Now, it’s all very well washing your vegetables before you eat them, but you will never remove 100% of the chemicals as some are stored in the vegetable itself. And what about salad?

These are only rinsed before use, meaning that you’re taking in a whole lot more chemicals. Organic vegetables have two distinct advantages over non organic: Firstly, and most importantly, they are not laden with chemicals. Secondly, they taste so much better!

Berries

Another great “superfood” that we hear a lot about. Berries and soft fruit; these contain health giving vitamins and also a lot of antioxidants which are important for protecting the body against free radicals.

However they are also big culprits for being covered in chemicals. Due to their propensity for pests and their ability to ripen very quickly, soft fruit is treated with a frightening amount of chemicals from specialized fertilizers to preservatives.

Again, you can’t wash these harmful toxins off, so the only way to get all the valuable nutrition without the pesticides is to buy organic fruit.

Apples

Apples are one of the most widely eaten fruits. A huge amount of apples are eaten worldwide every day, and as such they deserve a special mention.

Sadly apples are the number one “dirty” fruit when it comes to pesticide residues. Almost 100% of non organic apples show traces of chemicals. Organic apples really will keep the doctor away; they are good for you as well as being delicious.

Eggs

In an ideal world, we would all have a few chickens scratching around in our back yards. Eggs are so versatile and so widely used that having them at our fingertips, so to speak, would make life easier and probably shave a fair bit off your grocery bill over time!

For many of us, keeping chickens is not practical, so we have to opt for the next best thing… organic eggs from free range chickens. You really notice the difference between a free range egg and a caged egg, as free range eggs are bigger and tastier and much better for you (and for the chicken!)

Hens that are allowed to peck and scratch in the dirt like they are meant to and are much healthier and are not treated with antibiotics and chemicals in the way that factory chickens are.

These chemicals find their way into the eggs and therefore into your body so for your own sake, buy free range organic eggs!

Organic food, because it contains no chemical residues from pesticides and weedkillers, is so much better for you A build up of chemicals from non organic food can cause lethargy, headaches, stomach disorders and a general lowering of health.

With organic foods, you are taking in only the good nutrients, minerals and antioxidants contained in the food. This is great news because there are SO many health giving properties in organic food, so if you’re serious about getting healthy then you will want to go organic from now on!
